Biography

Craig Winston holds a Master of Music degree in classical guitar performance from the Lamont School of Music in Denver, CO. Mentored by Jonathan Leathwood, Laura Husbands, and Patrick Sutton, Craig has developed into an avid performer and instructor in Colorado and New Mexico. Beyond classical music, Craig has performed heavy metal, jazz, and musical theater. As an artist he seeks to combine this wide array of styles. In 2023 he founded Guitarra, Chitarra to bring unique guitar music to new audiences and students.
I started playing guitar at the age of 9 after hearing the music of Faith No M ... ore and Metallica, so my formative years were spent learning all the best thrash metal and grunge riffs until I attended Berklee College of Music and later Lewis & Clark College where I developed a sense for melody, composition, and technique through the study of Jazz. As a rock guitarist and composer I spent many years actively performing, composing, and touring as part of groups in Chicago, Denver, and Portland.
I began studying classical guitar in 2019 after the incredible, and enlightening, experience of attending the Denver International Guitar Festival at Lamont School of Music. During the 2020-2021 Coronavirus pandemic I returned home to New Mexico and completed my BFA studies at NMHU while applying to graduate programs for Classical Guitar Performance.

Experience

Craig has been a guitarist all of his life, beginning with a strong interest in rock music. He has toured with groups from all over the country and performed a variety of different styles from hard rock and metal to synth pop and musical theater.
He studied Jazz guitar at Berklee College of Music with Mark White and at Lewis & Clark College with Dan Balmer before ultimately completing his second Bachelor’s degree in classical guitar. He studied under Dr. Patrick Sutton at New Mexico Highlands University and with Roger Harmon at Community College of Denver.
