Experience
Rosel Labone has been praised by such operatic luminaries as international soprano Carol Vaness for her "young, vibrant, and colourful" singing, and by master voice teacher Bill Schuman as possessing a voice of "great potential and possibilities". This year, she was invited to audition for both the Metropolitan Opera and West End 2022/2023 seasons.
She has performed opera, oratorio and concert repertoire at venues around the US, Europe and Australasia, including the lead role of Lois in the world premiere of ‘Last Year in Samsonville’ at the National Opera Center in New York. In the 20
... 20-2021 season, she was offered lead roles with Boulder Opera Colorado (Marcellina in Nozze di Figaro) and Opera Kensington (Gypsy Queen in Balfe's Bohemian Girl.)
Ms. Labone’s distinctive timbre and dramatic intensity have allowed her to traverse a wide range of styles and genres in her career to date. Her diverse creative background combines with a broad theatrical and vocal range, flair and musicality to create captivating moments on stage. Operatic roles include Donna Elvira in ‘Don Giovanni’, Jenny in ‘The Threepenny Opera’, Galatea in ‘Acis and Galatea’, and the Mother in ‘Hansel and Gretel’.
She has performed with New York, Philadelphia and London-based companies Gemini Voices, Tabletop Broadway and SuitKase Productions as a cabaret artist, and as a featured opera and Broadway performer and pianist on Uplive Europe, Hago, and LA-based app ‘Happs’ to virtual audiences of over 100,000 viewers.
She continues to be in demand as an artist on the stage and studio platform, including television music composition and voiceover work. As a singer-songwriter, her music has been produced and released internationally. She was the soloist for the 2022 world premiere recording of NSW-based composer Lindsay McGregor’s ‘Nature Songs.’ Later this year, she will perform the soprano solos for ‘Where There Is Peace: An Armistice Oratorio’ with the New Zealand String Quartet.
In 2014, she was offered a travel scholarship and an internship to the U.K. and US as a young artist at Opera North (Pettman Dare Fellow) where she worked with the homeless community as part of Opera North’s SwitchOn project. That same year, she was awarded a scholarship to attend the Royal Northern College of Music's Postgraduate Performance programme, and was offered a place at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music.
As an international artist, Ms. Labone has received outstanding reviews for her performances in both dramatic and comedic repertoire. Critics were enthusiastic about her “panache for comedy” (Jo Hodgson, Theatre Review) in performances as Carlotta in ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ for Wellington Musical Theatre. Her concert work has been praised as “outstanding, sensitive, refined, and confidently projected” (Bronislaw Sozanski, The Ballarat Courier) and “characterful and sonorous” (Peter Mechen, Middle C.)
Ms. Labone has sung with orchestras across New Zealand and Australia, including the Melbourne Musicians featuring Metropolitan Opera star Elena Xanthoudakis at Melba Hall. She has performed with the Kronos Quartet and the Consort of Melbourne at the Melbourne Recital Centre, and has also sung with Opera Australia at the same venue.
