Biography

Born in Messina (Italy), Piero Alessi first approached the drums at the age of 14, playing different styles of music like pop, rock, funk, blues and rhythm and blues. His first instructor was Piero Vizzini, with whom he studied with for 3 years, until he started the Bachelors program at the Conservatorio di Musica Alessandro Scarlatti di Palermo. There, he studied with Giuseppe Urso. Urso taught Alessi how to read, play music, understand the roles of harmony and theory, and introduced him to the wondrous jazz scene.
After a few years, Alessi collaborated with many national and internation ... ally known musicians like Alessandro Presti, Orazio Maugeri, Giuseppe Vasapolli, Valerio Rizzo, Mario Castellano, Francesco Patti, Luigi Scaccianoce, John Serry, Jessica Young, Ricci Benson and others. He’s won many prizes with his quartet: 1st place at Pippo Ardini in 2015, 1st place at Enzo Randisi prize in 2016 and 1st place at Scarlatti Jazz Festival in 2018.
His first major step into the international jazz scene was in 2017, when he studied at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in United Kingdom. There, he had the opportunity to learn English, collaborate with many musicians, share music & culture, and perform at various festivals like Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Monketon.
After his time in the UK, he was the drummer for the jazz band “Four and More” on the international cruise line Royal Carabbean. After his graduation in the spring of 2019, he made the move to New York City, where he got to play with some of the best musicians in town like Johnny O’Neal, Michael Kanan, Pat Oleary, Gabrielle Stravelli, and others and take private lesson with Billy Drummond, Dan Weiss and Neal Smith.
In October 2019, Alessi performed an Italian tour with the outstanding Luca Filastro on piano, and Giuseppe Cucchiara on doublebass. During the early years of the pandemic, he completed his Masters Degree in Jazz Drums at the Conservatorio di Musica Alessandro Scarlatti di Palermo.
In late 2021, Alessi joined the legendary pianist, Johnny O’Neal, for his European Tour. They have just completed a extremely successful second round in Europe this November 2022, playing in important venues such as Blue Note (Milan), Half Note (Greece), Les Duc des Lombards (Paris), Birdland Jazz Club (Neuburg), Smallet Jazz Club (Modena), Tatum Art (Palermo) and more.
In March 2022 Piero moved back to New York City after a brief residency back in Europe. You can watch him perform with Johnny O’Neal and with other musicians in select venues throughout the city.
Piero is also a co-writer of the book “Soli storici per batteria jazz” written by Giuseppe Urso, Da Vinci publishing, Osaka. Read More
