Whether it is background music or the main event/show, I can provide entertainment with a big variety of musical genres. I am a very proficient sight-reader and is very comfortable to improvise as well, whether as a soloist or in an ensemble.

Biography

Petro Engelbrecht completed her BMus (cum laude), HonsBMus (cum laude) and MMus at Stellenbosch University under the supervision of Bennie van Eeden (1994-5, 1998-2001) and Melanie Horne (1996-7). Throughout her studies she was awarded numerous bursaries and prizes. She was appointed as student lecturer at Stellenbosch University from 1999 to 2001. During her studies she also acted as assistant accompanist at the University.
In 1996 she made her debut with the CTPO and in 2001 she was chosen to play with the USSO during their first concerto festival. During 1999 and 2000 she was the orchestr ... a pianist for the USSO.
In 1999 she was a finalist in the Nina Schumann and Mabel Quick competitions. In 2000 she won the Mabel Quick competition and also received the Mabel Quick Overseas Bursary. In 2002 she used that bursary to study under Evelyne Brancart at Indiana University, Bloomington (USA) where she also performed as an accompanist.
After returning from her overseas studies, she took up an appointment as accompanist at the University of the Free State. Since 2005 she has partnered with Lesley-Ann Mathews, regularly performing two-piano works, and since 2008 she has distinguished herself as a ballet pianist. In 2008 she also toured Europe (Budapest, Prague) as accompanist and violist with the choir of Fichardtpark High School. In 2009 she added a temporary appointment as accompanist and piano didactics lecturer at NIHE to her busy schedule. She accompanies regularly at national music competitions (UNISA, ATKV Muziq, Sanlam) and various choral competitions.
Since 2010 she is a freelance musician, playing in concert halls, clubs, and anything in between. In 2014 she completed her DMus at North-West University and was appointed as an UNISA examiner. Although classically trained, Petro has accumulated extensive experience in popular music, jazz and blues. She was radio personality and singer Karien Jordaan’s regular accompanist and has appeared as pianist in shows with Coenie de Villiers, Lucas Maree, Rina Hugo, Richard van der Westhuizen and others. She has partnered with many jazz musicians and is the arranger and pianist of a trio, Tango etc, catering for all genres of music with each performance. She has strengths in sight-reading, improvisation, arranging, ensemble-playing, accompaniment, and backing vocals. She also plays accordion and guitar.

I have performed in many concerts halls in SA, Zimbabwe, Prague, Budapest, Socchi, and America. I've been entertaining audiences with light and classical music for many years, adding humoristic comments for their entertainment.
