Description
In 1999, Leonardo DaSilva and Peter Hollens met in a University of Oregon writing class. Their common passion for singing inspired them to start a vocal group. Known as the first official collegiate a cappella group in Oregon, On The Rocks began a tradition of excellence in a genre that was previously unheard of in the Northwest. Since OTR's founding, several other groups have followed their lead and joined the fast growing a'cappella community.
Experience
Since it's inception, On The Rocks has released five albums: The self titled OTR (2002), Backgammon Sessions (2003), Full Coverage (2005), The Green Room (2008), and A Fifth (2010). A Fifth, their latest release, features many pop and radio standards.
The group has received multiple awards for their recordings, including selections on the BOCA compilation albums (Best of Collegiate A Cappella) in 2004, 2006, and 2009. The opening track from Full Coverage, "Kyrie," was selected for "Sing 2006" and is widely recognized in the collegiate a'cappella community as one of the best a'cappella reco
... rdings ever. In 2002 OTR placed 3rd at the International Competition of Collegiate a cappella and returned the next year in 2003 to place 2nd out of hundreds of groups. During the competitions they took in more than a dozen awards including, Best Soloist, Best Vocal Percussion, and Best Arrangement.
In the group's 10th year (2009-2010), they met an unprecedented amount of success. After traveling to the East Coast in the spring of 2010, two of On The Rocks' videos went "viral" on YouTube. First, their "Subway Rick Roll" video reached over one million views. Shortly after, their version of Lady Gaga's hit song "Bad Romance" reached over 7 million views and continues to reach to an international audience.
The viral success of the group led to an appearance on NBC's reality-competition show "The Sing Off," where they were selected as one of the top ten a'cappella groups in the nation. The show aired in December 2010 and received rave reviews. On The Rocks' performances were praised by both the audience and judges, being called "entertaining" and "exciting." OTR advanced to the semi-finals.
