Description
Up and coming Kiwi musician Karam David is set to release his debut single ‘Sleep’ on July 6 on iTunes and Spotify. After moving to London in 2014, Karam has spent the past 6 months recording his two debut singles in London’s Downtown Studios, Soho.
Karam grew up in Gisborne and then Mangawhai, a typical small town boy who was into rugby, music and mates. He was encouraged to learn guitar by his mother as a young teenager, beginning lessons with Kiwi musician Elliot Brown. With a small but growing guitar skill, much like his confidence to perform, Karam took the stage at a Country music
... club meet in Northland and played a Tennessee Ernie Ford song called Sixteen Tons. Infected with the bug to play more and more, Karam was introduced to a broader spectrum of musical influences (other than the likes of Elvis Presley and The Beatles, already idolised) such as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Into Karam’s teens, Elliot taught him to write songs using rock n roll structures and Blues progressions. Being in a local band was Karam’s next step towards a music career, and he began churning out a backlog of original songs and a 2-3 hour set list of covers to work with. From 2005 to the summer of 2014, he played gigs at Northland’s Mangawhai Tavern along with several other venues on his nights off from Chefing in a local Mangawhai restaurant until moving to London last year.
As soon as Karam arrived in London, he auditioned for a spot at Downtown Studios, offering an 18 month promo contract including the chance to record two (original) songs. He applied, auditioned and was offered the gig. The Two songs Karam chose to record are a Jim Morrison influenced take on living in a city (with its lights, sights and sirens) in titled 'Sleep'; ironic being in a place that doesn't. The second song called 'Ecstasy Eyes' is a slower, more romantic love song, in contrast to the more rocky Sleep that he think shows a little blues/reggae element that can be found in a lot of his writing style, which he has dubbed 'Beach blues'.
Karam’s passion to see the world and his need for a fresh start are two big reasons for the move. In Mangawhai, he was a bit of a ‘big fish’ in a small pool, and felt that moving himself into a much larger pool like London would be a great challenge musically. He plans to learn as much as he can about the music industry while in London, and return to New Zealand in 2016 to continue on with his music career.
Karam is working full time as a Chef in London, and on top of this is now busy attending open mic nights, gigging in and around London, and building a fan base and excitement for future recordings with the studio, hopefully an EP later in the year and of course the release of Sleep and Ecstasy Eyes.
Karam David’s debut single ‘Sleep’ will be available to download on iTunes and Spotify from July 6.
