Biography
Gina Ketter, violinist, violist and electric violinist is an active performer in the Pittsburgh area for more than 20 years. She has a diverse musical background that ranges from baroque ensembles to contemporary music and rock & roll. She is a graduate of CMU where she received BFA and MFA degrees. Her teachers include Yitzak Schotten, a protégé of William Primrose, and Atar Arad, a former member of the Cleveland String Quartet. Active in electronic string music, she was a founding member of the electrified string quartet EQ, and has performed and recorded with several rock, punk and alt
... ernative musical groups. She currently leads King Fez, a rock-tinged belly dance group. Her contemporary musical studies have included study in France at the Ecole D’Art de Fontainbleau in 2000 & 2001 and the Arabic Music Retreat in 2014 through 2016.
Ms. Ketter began her musical studies on the viola while in middle school. Shortly after, she began private lessons at Wickersham Studio under the tutelage of Lois Dietrich. Quickly achieving status as a promising musician Ms. Ketter advanced through many orchestras as principal violist while in high school. After graduation she won a full scholarship to attend Dusquesne University as a viola performance major where she studied with Richard Goldner and Nancy Lynne Ramsey. Unfortunate family events required Ms. Ketter to leave her studies and obtain work to help support her family at home. During this period she joined a local punk rock band and honed her improvisatory skills while playing clubs in the Pittsburgh area. After a few years she decided it was time to restart her professional studies at Carnegie- Mellon University where she obtained a BFA with teaching certification. Upon graduation she gained employment as an orchestra director in the Mt. Lebanon School District where she taught elementary through high school string education. While teaching and directing the orchestra program in Mt. Lebanon, Ms. Ketter continued to perform with many ensembles in the area including the Westmoreland, Wheeling and Johnstown Symphonies. She also founded the Firenza String Quartet and performed at many weddings and corporate events. It was about this time that Ms. Ketter began summer study on baroque viola at the Oberlin College Baroque Performance Institute. After completing studies she joined the University of Pittsburgh’s Bach and the Baroque Ensemble under the direction of Don Franklin, a Bach scholar in early music performance practice. She currently is a member of the Pittsburgh Baroque Ensemble and frequently performs with Chatham Baroque and the Calvary Episcopal and Fox Chapel Presbyterian baroque ensembles. Wanting to diversify her musical endeavors yet again, Ms. Ketter bought a 6 string electric ‘Viper’ violin and studied electric violin with Mark Wood, founding member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. She began performing with local punk and rock band and did studio recording work for several artists. Since 2012 she has been on the faculty of the Cello Fury Rock String Camp where she teaches popular and rock music to young string players. In 2013, Ms. Ketter formed the bellydance rock band King Fez. To expand her knowledge in microtonal playing she began formal studies in Arabic Violin performance with Simone Shaheen and Laiyth Sidiq. In 2021 Ms. Ketter retired from teaching in the Mt. Lebanon School District and continues to freelance in several ensembles as well as be lead violinist for the King Fez Band. She also joined the Steven Vance Entertainment group as solo electric violinist and performs weekly for weddings and special events.
