Physical Characteristics
Meet the Act
I started in comedy at the urging of my family. Six years ago, my wife was diagnosed with appendix cancer and needed a 16-hour surgery to save her life. A year later, almost to the day, my 22-year-old daughter was diagnosed with AML Leukemia. We spent the next four years living off and on in the hospital between my daughter and wife. After work, I would go straight to their hospital rooms, determined to make them laugh and forget their struggles, even if just for a moment. Every day, I brought a funny story to share. Soon, the nurses started coming into the room to listen and laugh.
One day
... , my daughter suggested I try stand-up comedy. I promised her that once she was out of the hospital and we were back home, I would give it a shot. When she finally returned home, I did everything I could to avoid fulfilling that promise. But a few months later, my family cornered me at home. My daughter reminded me of my promise and said that after all she and my wife had endured, I couldn't back out. They practically dragged me to Loonies in Colorado Springs for an open mic night.
I was scheduled to do two minutes and was second to last out of about 50 performers. I was so nervous that I almost backed out, but then I saw my daughter sitting across from me, her knees on the chair and her head scarf on, smiling from ear to ear. I couldn't let her down, even if it meant embarrassing myself. I went up and did my two minutes, gripping the mic for dear life. When I finished, the owner pulled me aside and encouraged me to continue comedy. I've been doing shows ever since.
