Description

As a multi-instrumentalist and composer, I possess a comprehensive understanding of music and how instruments function within any musical setting. I am adept at flute, keys, bass and drums, and in addition to those, I can double on upright bass and saxophone. With an Honours Degree in Music Composition and ABRSM Grade 8 Piano, I can rapidly produce and compose music and sight read on the fly. In addition, I build and repair guitars and cymbals, so my technical expertise comes in handy when it's needed!

Biography

Singaporean-born luthier, composer and multi-instrumentalist Doran is a proficient, versatile and award-winning multi-disciplinarian. Educated in Singapore, they began pursuing music at the age of three and began performing as a live musician in the local indie scene, with their band The New Modern Lights.
Doran began their instrument crafting journey by designing and building their first bass guitar in 2019. Since then, they have delved into guitar repair and design, creating and working on the instruments of their bandmates and contemporaries. In 2020, they developed a prototype of a tran ... sformative pickup system, which can be adjusted to produce a multitude of timbres. In 2021, during their second year in their degree program, they were Inspired by a drummer classmate, Doran began to explore the realm of cymbal crafting in 2021, modifying and repairing cymbals to create unique tones not found in mass-produced instruments.
Doran has trained under Tan Weixiang, Christy Smith, and Belinda Foo from 2017-2023, proceeding to win the award for Single of the Year (Rock) at the annual Singapore Youth Music Awards in 2021 with their band. Meet the Act

I started learning music at the age of 3! My parents got my brother and I to learn at Yamaha's young kids course, and it just went on from there. I developed perfect pitch as a result of hearing my brother practice, and by the time it was my turn to play the same pieces, I could play all of them from memory!
I went on to play with my brother in an indie-rock band, The New Modern Lights, playing synthesiser, flute, tambourine and backing vocals. The band is on temporary hiatus, as my brother's gone to study in London.
I studied at LASALLE College of the Arts, wherein I pursued a Diploma i ... n Pop Performance, as well as a Degree in Music Composition. While I studied there, I picked up bass and drums due to the lack of rhythm section players, as well as flute as I love bossa nova, and the flute is such a perfect fit! I learnt lots of jazz, despite the school programs being oriented towards pop and classical music, and I've been going to a bunch of bar jazz jams.
I pickup up guitar lutherie shortly after picking up the bass guitar, and I've been building instruments ever since! My dissertation was on developing a moving pickup system for the electric bass, and it was a ton of fun to write and develop. My cymbal making endeavour came to be after a fellow classmate who's an accomplished jazz drummer suggested to me! I'm not sure whether he was joking, but it's been a fun and rewarding journey thus far.
